The first Amiga was released in 1985, and it was the Amiga 1000. It was a 16 bit computer system, which utilized the Motorola 68000 cpu. Two year later, the Amiga 500 was released in 1987 to be gaming computer. It wasn’t very popular in the United States, but it did have a huge following in the United Kingdom, and many parts of Western Europe in the mid 1980s to the early 1990s. The Amiga had many games on it, and many of the games developed and produced for it were very good. Amiga games were as good as video game consoles, like the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive, Nintendo Entertainment System, Turbografx-16/PC-Engine, and others.

On this webpage, I will show you how to setup and run a Amiga emulation. It is quite difficult to get a hold of a actual Amiga, but you can get a feel of how Amiga programs and games were like in the late 1980s, and early 1990s.

Retroarch Amiga Emulator

To setup Retroarch for the Amiga emulator, you must do the following.

1. Copy the kickstart BIOS files into the retroarch systems folder.
   The path is drive:\RetroArch\system .
2. Make a directory on your hard drive, and put your Amiga games on it.
This can be any directory. For example, d:\emulators\amiga\games .
3. Make a .m3u file for multiple floppy disks. You can do this by opening
notepad, and type in the contents on the game folder.
For example:

d:\emulators\amiga\games\A10 has the following disks
A-10 Tank Killer_Disk1.adf
A-10 Tank Killer_Disk2.adf

In the notepad, I will type

A-10 Tank Killer_Disk1.adf
A-10 Tank Killer_Disk2.adf

Then, go to "file" on the top left corner of notepad, and
"save as". Go to the directory where the game disks are, and
"save type as" all. Type in a name for the file, like A-10.m3u ,
don't forget to put .m3u as the extension file.

4. Go to your RetroArch directory, and start the Retroarch program.

5. In Retroarch, you have to download and load the Amiga emulator.
          • Go to "Main Menu" - This is located on the left side of the screen.
          • Go to "Load Core"
          • Go to "Download Core"
          • Find Commodore Amiga and select the emulator that you want.
For me, I selected Amiga (PUAE) emulator.
6. If you haven't already configured the controls, please do this first.
          • Go to "settings"
          • Go to "Input"
          • Go to "Port 1 Controls" (Configure your joystick or gamepad there)
          • In the Input menu, go to "hotkeys" and set a controller combo to
access the menu, like "start + select". This will enable you
to go into the options menu to configure the emulator.
7. Configure the Amiga emulator.
          • Go to "Main Menu"
          • Go to "Load Core"
          • Select the Amiga (PUAE) emulator
          • Go to "Start Core"
          • After you started the emulator, go to to quick menu by
pressing "start + select" on your gamepad.
          • In the quick menu, go to "Options", and go to "System".
In system, you can emulate different Commodore Amiga
computers, like a Amiga 500, Amiga 600, Amiga 1200, etc.
This is dependent on the firmware or kickstart bios files
you copied into the systems directory.
          • In the system menu, you can change the settings for the
Automatic Floppy. Here you can associate the correct
floppy drive to the correct Amiga computer.
          • Change speed of floppy disk drive. Go back to "Options", and go to
"Media". Here select "floppy speed", turbo is the best option.
After you finish, go back to "Quick Menu", and "Close Content".
8. In the main menu, you want to import all your Amiga games to Retroarch.
To do this click on "Import Content" -> "Manual Scan" -> "Content Directory", and
select the directory where your Amiga games are at. For me, it is D:\Emulator\Amiga\Games, but
for you it would be something else. "Scan this directory", and go to "System Name". Then,
select "Commodore Amiga", and "start scan".
9. You will see a Amiga icon on the right side of the menu, so you
can start the games in the Amiga icon.
10. When starting games, use the left of right mouse button to get the game to start.
If you configured your controller, you can only use one button, because the
Commodore Amiga controller had only one button.
