The Neogeo was both a arcade cabinet, and a home video game console system. The home version was identical to the arcade version in terms of graphics, game play, and performance. It was released in the U.S.A. in August 22, 1990, and it was released in Japan in April 26, 1990. The home console version retailed for $649.99 when it was introduced, and games retailed for about $300 each. The reason for this was because rom memory was expensive in those days. The Neogeo used 330 megabit cartridges, so one megabit was equal to 0.125 megabytes. A 330 megabit cartridge could hold about 41.25 megabytes that was a lot of memory. Compare that to the average hard drive of the time which was about 40 megabytes to 60 megabytes. The Neogeo console itself came with 64 kilobytes of ram, 0.0625 megabytes, or 2 megabits of ram. This is why Neogeo games were so expensive.

A CD version of the Neogeo was released in 1994, and that reduced the cost for each game. By 1994, the Neogeo was pretty much obsolete, and in 1990 it was state of the art. The only problem was that it was too expensive at one game being $300 was not affordable. It did well in the arcade market, and I remember playing many great arcade titles, like Samurai Shodown, Metal Slug I to IV, Last Blade, and others. Neoragex emulator was released in 1999, and the Neogeo hardware was discontinued in 1997. The computers at the time where Pentium II/III, and Athlon based processors were more than capable of running the Neoragex emulator. I used the Neoragex emulator back in 2000 on a Pentium III 800 mhzs computer, and it ran just fine. People who developed emulators like this enable people to run obsolete game consoles, like this.
