Sega Dreamcast

The Sega Dreamcast was released around September 9th of 1999, and it a 32 bit video game console. It had a dedicated 3d accelerator, and I thought the games on it were good. The only problem with this console was that it lacked software support, most of the games made by was from Sega. The reason for it being it was difficult to develop games for the Sega Dreamcast, so many of these 3rd party game developers made games for the Sony Playstation 2 instead.

The funny thing about the Dreamcast was that it lacked DVD support, because it came with a CD-ROM drive. The Playstation 2 came out with DVD support, so people could watch DVD movies and play games also. This allowed for a more versatile system. There was a big issue with piracy with the Dreamcast, people were able to pirate Dreamcast games due to the Sega using CD-ROM support. At the time, CD-RW drives were wide spread at the time, but DVD-RWs weren’t mainstream until 2003. Also, the Dreamcast was retailed for much less than the Playstation 2, so they were losing money on every system sold.

The actual games for the Dreamcast were great, games like Shenmue, Silent Scope, and others had arcade quality graphics. You could not tell the arcade cabinet games and the Dreamcast console games apart. Shenmue was the first adventure game that used 3d accelerated graphics in simulated world environment. The Dreamcast even had a RJ-45 network port which would have allowed for connecting your Dreamcast to broadband internet, like cable or DSL. It also came with a 56k baud modem port as well. The life cycle of the Dreamcast was about 18 months, so it was introduced in Sept of 1999 and discontinued in March of 2001. Most game consoles need more time than that to recoup the costs of developing the video game console. They do that by issuing licenses to 3rd party software developers, who in turn pay a licensing fee for every game they produce. Ironically, the Dreamcast was the best video game console Sega developed and produced, but it was the last one they produced. It resulted in Sega leaving the video game console market for good.

Someone made a emulator based on the Dreamcast, and you are able to run the Dreamcast on your PC. It is called NullDC.
