A. Disable Disk Defragmenter on Windows

By default Windows operating systems from Windows 7 to Windows 10 have defragmenter enabled. You should have it disabled, for the following reasons. One, a SSD uses nand memory modules, and it doesn’t use a spinning disk. Thus, defragging your SSD is unnessary. 2ndly, if you use the defragmenter, it does a lot of unnecessary writing which wears out your SSD.

B. Install and Configure a M.2 SSD

To install a M.2 or NVMe SSD, you have to tilt the SSD in a 40 °. Then, you slide it in at that angle, it should not require much force to get it in. M.2 slots are in 4th generation I5/I7 to 9th generation I5/I7 desktop and laptop computers. The newer motherboards will have more M.2/NVMe slots than older motherboards.

M.2 SSDs are slower than NVMe SSDs, a M.2 SSD has a bandwidth of 550
megabyte/second while a NVMe SSD has read speeds of 3.5 gigabytes/second
and write speeds 2.5 gigabytes/second.

M.2/NVMe slots have different lengths, so you have to check if your motherboard supports some of the longer M.2/NVMe SSDs. Most newer motherboards will support the long M.2/NVMe SSDs, but for the older motherboard you have to check to see if the longer SSDs will fit or not.

Procedure
♦ 1. Refer to your motherboard manual and find out where the M.2 slot is located.
♦ 2. Insert the M.2 SSD at a 30 ° angle. Push in until it goes in all
the way, but don't force it. It should go in easily. Then, it will stick
out at a 30 °.
♦ 3. Go into Windows. Go to the search tab, and type in Computer
Management -►Storage -► Disk Management Locate the SSD, and create a
disk partition.
♦ 4. Run the disk backup program, for me it is Macrium Reflect. You can
use any software you want to make your hard drive image. After you
finished, make verify your image. Make sure you make a boot disk, so you
can boot into the program to restore your image.
♦ 5. Insert the bootable CD to your optical drive.
♦ 6. Restart your computer, and go into the BIOS to setup your boot
priorities. Make sure the first bootable device is set as the optical
disk. If you are using a bootable flash drive then make sure your 1st
bootable device is the USB device.
♦ 7. Save your settings in the bios and exit.
♦ 8. Boot into the bootable disk.
♦ 9. Restore your hard drive image from your hard drive to your M.2 SSD.
♦ 10. After it finishes, exit the program, and boot into Windows. Check
to see if everything was transferred to your M.2 SSD

C. Install a msata SSD

Msata SSDs are like M.2/NVMe SSDs in that they are rectangular in shape. Other than that, they different. You cannot put a msata SSD in a M.2/NVMe slot or vice versa.
Msata slots are available in laptops which are 4th generation or less. Msata SSDs are more expensive than M.2 SSDs, because they are no longer being produced. I have a MSI Ge-70 laptop, I wanted to put a SSD in it, and this was my option to do it.

D. How to Move Google Chrome Cache Folder

If you have a SSD and you use Google Chrome, it would be a good idea to move all the cache file from your SSD to a hard drive. Since most computer users use the internet very often, you will do a lot of writing to your SSD. This in turn will wear out your SSD much faster than having all the cache written to another hard drive.

Procedure:
♦ 1. Locate the Google cache folder. C:\Users\%Username%\AppData\Local
\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default (This should work on all computers,
because I used %username% does not work in Windows 10. For Windows 10
find your user name and put it in.)
♦ 2. Delete or rename the cache folder. If you do not do this, you will
get an error which states. Cannot create a file when that file already
exists . You cannot link a folder which exists; therefore, you must
delete or change the folder name.
♦ 3. Open Command Prompt, use the Mklink command.
Format:
Mklink /d "Source Directory" "Target" Examples used in
this video mklink /d "C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Local\Google
\Chrome\User Data\Default\Cache" "E:\Cache\Chrome_Cache"
(Chrome Cache Folder was moved E:\Cache\Chrome_Cache)
mklink /d "C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User
Data\Default\Media Cache" "E:\Cache\Chrome_MediaCache"
(Chrome Media Cache folder was moved to E:\Cache\Chrome_MediaCache
folder) To Undo it:
1. Go to C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User
Data\Default , and delete the cache folder or folders you
created. After that, chrome will automatically create another cache
folder.

E. Move Mozilla Firefox Cache Folder

1. Open Your Mozilla Firefox Browser
2. Go to the URL box and type in about:config
3. Accept the warnings
4. Right Click
5. Select new, and select string Enter the preference name:
browser.cache.disk.parent_directory browser.cache.disk.parent_directory:
type in directory
6. Close the Mozilla Firefox Browser. 7. Open Firefox Browser and browse
around the internet, so the cache folder gets populated. 8. Go to your
new cache file folder and see if there are changes.

Moving the internet browser cache folder is a good way to increase the
life of your SSD drive. The internet browser is usually in the c drive,
and most SSDs are in c drive, because that is where the operating system
is installed on. Nand memory does not wear out when you read it, the
wear and tear results from writing and deleting. Cache memory is
regularly written and cleared.

When you use your internet browser, cache is written to your hard drive,
so when you go to the same site it loads faster. The internet browser is
one of those things you will use a lot, so at the end of the month you
could have written and deleted as much as 100 gigabytes per month or
more. A typical SSD drive is about 500 gbs to 1 tb, and it can be
written and deleted about 1000 to 2000 times. Depending on how much time
you spend on your computer, the more cache you will have. The advantages
of moving your internet browser cache folder to your mechanical drive is
that, the mechanical drive is larger than your SSD drive. It is also
cheaper to replace, and it doesn't have your operating system on it. As
a result, you can use it to store your cache. I don't think mechanical
hard drives will go away anytime soon, it has a very good price to
storage ratio.

F. Move Opera Cache Folder to Another Drive

1. Go to the C:\Users\%Username%
\AppData\Local\Opera Software\Opera
Stable FOLDER, and delete or rename the cache folder, and the media
cache folders. If those folders exist, you will get an error that
states. "Cannot create a file when that file already exists" Having a
folder that exists will not enable you to link it.

2. Create a folder where you want your cache files to go. For this
example, I put E:\Cache\Opera, but for you it can be something
different.

Format:
mklink /d "source directory" "target directory"
Code used in example:
mklink /d "C:\Users\H\AppData\Local\Opera Software\Opera Stable\Cache"
"E:\Cache\Opera"
(I used this to move my Opera Cache directory to my target directory of
E:\Cache\Opera folder)
mklink /d "C:\Users\H\AppData\Local\Opera Software\Opera Stable\Media
Cache" "E:\Cache\Operamedia"
(I used this link to move the Opera Media cache folder to E:\Cache
\Operamedia folder) This should work for Mozilla Firefox, and Chrome as
well.

G. Move Windows Voice Recorder Files to Another Location

The easiest way to move your Voice Recorder Files to another
location, whether that be a different folder on the same drive, or
another hard drive on your computer. In this video, I will move it to
another hard drive on the same computer.
Procedure:
♦ 1. Locate the file location of Windows Voice Recorder saved files by
going to search and typing in Voice Recorder.
♦ 2. Start the Voice Recorder program and open file location, and find
where it is.
♦ 3. Make sure to change the name of Sound recordings folder to another
name, or delete it. Your old folder cannot exist, or you will get an
error message, like Cannot create a file when that file already exists .
Write the file location down on a text file or remember it.
♦ 4. Go to the new location you want all your files in your old folder
to go.
♦ 5. Go to search and type in CMD, and select it. You can run it as
administrator mode if you want.
♦ 6. Type in the commands.
Format: mklink /d "source location" "destination location"
In this video:
mklink /d "C:\Users\user1\Documents\Sound recordings" "e:\E:\Temp
Files\Sound" mklink /d "Source Location" "Destination Location"
♦ 7. Record something with Voice recorder to see if all your recorded
files are going to your new file location.

I. SSDs and Different Types of Nand Memory

SLC ► Single Level Cell 1 bit per cell MLC
► Multi Level Cell 2 bits per cell TLC
► Triple Level Cell 3 bits per cell █▓▒█▓▒█▓▒█▓▒█▓▒█▓▒█▓▒█▓▒█▓▒█▓▒█▓▒█▓▒█▓▒█▓▒
Typically, the less dense a cell is packed equates to more durability,
and the more densely packed a cell is equates to a lower life cycle.
Having more a less densely packed cell means, the cells will have more
flexibility. It costs much more to use 1 bit per cell than having 3 bits
per cell.

J. Windows 10 DVR Recorder How to Change Saving Captures File Directory

If you use the DVR in Windows 10, you can move the directory where the video files are copied to. By default, Windows 10 will copy your video files to your main drive where your operating system is located. However, you can change the directory to another hard drive. If you a SSD, you may want to do this to reduce the wear and tear on your SSD. On a SSD, it wears out everytime you write to it. You can minimize it by doing this.
